Choriste à Eton, puis élève de Henry Purcell, avant d’être organiste au New College d’Oxford.
Il remporta le concours organisé pour la mise en musique de The Judgment of Paris, pièce de William Congreve, devançant notamment John Eccles et Daniel Purcell.
